Guitar Chord Key

This key describes the notation attached to the various different types of guitar chords on the following pages.

The root note of the chord is indicated by a capital letter R above the string that the root note appears on.

Guitar Chord C Major

An open string is one which is played without any fingers pressing the string against any fret, and is indicated by the small letter o above the string, unless it is the root note.

A string which is not to be played is indicated by a small letter x above the string.

Guitar Chord D Major

The numbered circles represent the position of the fingers of the left hand on the strings (Assumes a left handed person). 1 is the index finger, 2 is the second finger, 3 is the ring finger, 4 is the little finger.

The numbers of the frets are indicated down the left hand side of the figure.
