Is there any buses going to Agia Napa to Paphos?

I'm thinking about moving to Paphos, and we're going down to Cyprus to check it out. But travel from Sweden to Agia Napa ismuch cheaper than directly to Paphos.

What would it cost to take a bus/taxi from Agia Napa to Paphos and how long would it take?

As well attracting throngs of tourists on cheap flights to Larnaca each year, Cyprus is also becoming a bit of a hot-spot for UFO sightings. This has given rise to the cheeky notion from locals that the island is so beautiful that it even attracts visitors from out of this world.

A couple of weeks ago, there was numerous sightings of an orange light passing slowly through the sky before apparently drifting over a hill, only to be seen by other holidaymakers and locals further down the coast.
“It was beautiful and mesmerizing”

Even the party crowd in Ayia Napa claimed to see a similar orange object hanging in the air. One onlooker, enjoying a holiday in Cyprus, said:

“It was beautiful and mesmerizing. It was fairly high in the sky and moved with no sound, it also had a beautiful white aura."

There has been a notable increase in UFO sightings on the island in recent years with many people escaping to the Troodos Mountains, for some adventure and shade, claiming to see UFO’s in the sky.

So, with visitors of a very different kind hovering over Cyprus, you might find cheap flights to Larnaca or Paphos out of this world.

Not surprised the party crowds in Napa see UFOs.

Quote:
NICOSIA, July 26 (Reuters) - A work to rule protest by Greek air traffic controllers over austerity-driven reforms in their sector has disrupted hundreds of flights in and out of Cyprus.

Cyprus national carrier Cyprus Airways said more than a dozen flights were cancelled on Monday and airport operators said over 300 flights had been delayed since Sunday.

Greek air space is the only avenue available to Cypriot carriers flying to Europe since Turkish air space lying directly to the island's north is closed to Cypriot commercial traffic.

Greek controllers cancelled a planned 24-hour strike on Sunday but instead launched work to rule with avoidance of overtime and strict adherence to air space capacity guidelines. They said their action was trimming the numbers of flights they handle by about 10 percent daily. Their union would decide later on Monday if it would continue the labour action.

"Our only way out to Europe is over the Aegean. We cannot avoid Greek air space," said Cyprus Airways spokesman Kyriakos Kyriakou.

He said Turkish air space has been closed to Cypriot carriers since 1974, when Turkey invaded Cyprus's north after a short Greek-inspired coup on the eastern Mediterranean island.

Delays experienced by Cyprus Airways were compounded by regulations stipulating 12 hour shifts for airline crews. The delays were consuming shift times, and depleting available staff levels, the airline said.

In Greece, airport officials said over 40 flights had been delayed by up to 30 minutes since midnight on Sunday.

The air traffic controllers are demanding more jobs and payment for overtime, against a reform plan meant to reorganise the civil aviation sector to make it more competitive.

Greece's labour unions have staged repeated strikes this year against austerity measures the debt-hobbled country has agreed with the IMF and its euro zone partners in return for a 110 billion euro ($138 billion) bailout.

Quote:
BRITISH BASES SBA authorities are carrying out more tests on the mysterious ‘poo-like’ substance on Curium beach yesterday, although they can already confirm that it is not human waste and not harmful.

James Mansell, SBA spokesman, said yesterday that they have not issued a warning against visiting the beach, and that local laboratories are still testing the waste material, which the SBA authorities believe is from turtles.

One resident who visited the beach on Monday said that the amount of waste, which looked human waste but with a green colour and a squishy texture, had increased in recent weeks.

Tony from Limassol said: “We went [on Monday] and between Chris Blue and Sunshine beaches it was horrendous. One restaurant owner had assigned three of his workers to clear the waste into bin bags.”

The origin of the waste remains unknown, although SBA authorities have confirmed that there are no leaks in local sewage treatment works.

Asked about the material, SBA administrative secretary James Gondelle said “It does not represent a health hazard. Furthermore, despite appearance, we are confident that this is not human waste, and very strong circumstantial evidence indicates that it is in fact from turtles.”

They have also ruled out the possibility that the waste had come from a passing ship, as onboard sewage treatment facilities transform human waste into small dust-sized particles before they can be release from a ship.

According to Tony, the material has had a devastating impact on the number of visitors to the beach since it was discovered in mid May. He noted that the beach was packed at the same time last year; now it is all but empty. “Yesterday I saw a mother with her toddler on the beach, and when I pointed out the waste she picked up her child and left straight away.”

A similar incident did in fact occur last year when poo-like material on SBA beaches was reported to authorities. In response, all British forces facilities were checked to ensure there were no leaks, facilities in local villages were inspected, and ships entering Limassol were checked to ensure they had not been illegally discharging at sea.

“Nothing untoward was discovered.” said Gondelle, adding that “The Cyprus Tourism Organisation conducted samples of the water at Curium and these established that there was no hazard to health. Most reassuringly perhaps, further laboratory tests in Nicosia indicated that the matter was not in fact human. Based on similar experiences in Hawaii, speculation at the time suggested it was from turtles.”

The SBA environmental team has also conducted its own tests, which support the theory that this is turtle-poo, since the material is composed entirely of vegetable matter, contains organisms not found in mammals and has only appeared during the turtle breeding season.

Gondelle said “This... lends credibility, however incredible it may sound, to the notion that this is indeed from turtles. Scientific investigations will continue and we will ensure that the results are publicised as soon as they are known.”

The cheap getaway: It STILL costs less to holiday in Cyprus or Turkey than to stay in the UK

Families holidaying in the UK to save money could end up paying more than those jetting to popular foreign hot spots.
British resorts and businesses impose such high prices that it might be cheaper to fly thousands of miles to a resort abroad, a study shows.
So a week at the seaside in this country is more expensive than Bodrum, in Turkey, Greece or Cyprus, which attract millions of families looking for sunshine.
Bargain: A survey has found it is cheaper to fly to Turkey, Greece or Cyprus for a week's holiday than to stay in a British seaside resort
It is also cheaper to visit several East European countries, such as Slovenia, Hungary, Poland and Bulgaria, which offer beautiful cities and new experiences.
Researchers at Tesco Bank looked at typical holiday expenses for one week for a family of four in August, including accommodation, car hire, eating out and family entertainment.
While they did not include the cost of getting to the resort, the price gap is so large for many countries that it would still be cheaper to travel using a budget airline.
The figure for Brighton came out at £2,209 - £390 more than buying the equivalent items in Bodrum.
So even considering that return flights from London Gatwick to Bodrum would cost around £80 via easyJet, it's still a bargain.
Brighton certainly has a great history and many attractions, from the Royal Pavilion and the pier to nightclubs and the Lanes.

But while it offers standard seaside fare of fish and chips and curry houses, Bodrum, on the Aegean Sea, boasts Turkish food as well as sun, sandy beaches and nightlife.
There are also several all-inclusive hotel resorts where the cost of food and drink is included in the package.

John Howells, head of travel money at Tesco Bank, said holiday costs have been impacted by the euro exchange rate.
'With the average cost of a holiday for one week coming in at £2,076, a 2 per cent increase on last year, it is essential holidaymakers are not just looking into the cost of travel but also the expenses they are likely to incur once they are there.
'For instance, car hire and accommodation make up 71 per cent of weekly spend and have risen 6 per cent on last year.'
Meanwhile, lastminute.com has seen a rush of people logging on to look for travel deals after England's elimination from the World Cup on Sunday.
Bookings rose 25 per cent on the previous day in the hours after the final whistle was blown.
The firm's head of travel, Andy Washington, said: 'People want a way of getting over the football blues, and for many a late summer break is the thing they need.'
Lowcostholidays.com, meanwhile, said the number of people visiting its website rose 40 per cent compared to last week.

The wreck of the Zenobia has become a popular diving destination and for good reason

THIRTY years ago this month the 12,000 tonne Zenobia passenger roll-on roll-off ferry capsized off the coast of Larnaca, taking with it over 100 lorries, industrial machinery and a cage of racing dogs.

Today, it is regarded as one of the world's top ten wreck dives and is quickly gaining popularity with divers because of the wide variety of experiences on offer, with cargo, sea life and scenic underwater views all available.

“This is a brilliant dive; it is a real asset for the Cyprus tourism industry,” says Chris Martin from Alpha Divers in Larnaca, “She is a fantastic wreck and a real asset to the Cyprus diving market.”

Along with about 12 members of my family, we 'did' this last year, as part of a private party all day boat hire. Well worth it. Amazing even tho' I didn't go inside it, just viewed from under the water above it. The qualified SCUBA divers did.

I agree this is a real asset to Cyprus Tourism Industry. Everyone always finds it one of the most memorable highlights of their holiday.

High prices are hurting tourism

Quote:
THE MAIN complaint by tourists who come to Cyprus is that the high prices are not reflected in quality and services, travel agents warned yesterday.

The Association of Cyprus Travel Agents (ACTA) also called for the radical restructuring of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) so that it becomes more effective.

“The main complaint we receive from our visitors is that our prices do not reflect the quality and services on offer,” said ACTA chairman Victor Mantovani during the organisation’s AGM. “Anyone who thinks they will achieve an increase in their profits with unreasonable prices is mistaken and unfortunately they not only hurt their own pocket but our country in general.”

Mantovani said ACTA disagreed with a recent survey that found Cyprus to be the cheapest tourist destination.

Cyprus topped the list of cheapest places to holiday in a survey by Skyscanner, which took into account the cost of visiting the country and flights.

“What is the excuse? The higher rent rates at Phinikoudes (Larnaca seafront) compared to Oxford Street?” Mantovani said.

The ACTA chief also took a shot at airport operator Hermes for its charges.

“Unfortunately the rates charged by Hermes to the users of the new airport are deemed very high, a fact that is certain to deal a further blow to the already hurt competitiveness of our tourist product,” Mantovani said.

He reiterated the need for the radical restructuring of the CTO into two organizations – one handling administrative and legal issues and the other dealing exclusively with drafting strategies and promoting tourism.

“At the moment our tourism is like a sail boat in the middle of the ocean without wind and without a compass. The result: stagnation,” Mantovani said.

“Tourism needs vision, proper planning and coordination and guidance. Things that the CTO is not in a position to offer in its current bureaucratic form,” Mantovani said.

CTO chairman Alecos Orountiotis suggested there will be change within the organisation and appeared optimistic over tourist arrivals this year.

He said one should not remain fixated on specific ways of action but “readjust and broaden our actions.”

“At the CTO we have adjusted our promotional actions depending on the features and the conditions of every market, considering the wider economy.”

The head of the CTO said that despite the difficulties, there has been an increase in arrivals in May by almost five per cent.

“This sends positive and optimistic messages, arming us with more strength and insistence to continue the efforts,” Orountiotis said.
